"Finally, AI can do my homework for me!" Tech in school, a positive shift | H-FARM
At H-FARM International School, we're all about responsible tech – featuring Mauro Bordignon's insights.
We have seen incredible projects achieved by 14-year-olds, and even younger students:
developing an encryption and decryption system in WhatsApp
teaching drones to recognize facial traits and respond to hand gestures
creating professional music and films with Generative AI
making a wind tunnel to study aerodynamics, designing and printing a 3D car, and then testing its Cx in the wind tunnel
building various-shaped skyscraper models and testing them for seismic waves using a platform they designed and 3D printed themselves
Technology is everywhere, and that goes for young people too. It's all about using it wisely to enhance the way we learn – something we are deeply passionate about at H-FARM International School.
We use many advanced technologies, including AI, to help students and teachers learn and collaborate in more engaging ways.
We know technologies come with risks, sometimes scary ones, but we also know how powerful they are for education.
From banning tech to being smart with it
Instead of forbidding tools, social media, or softwares in the classroom, it is essential to teach students how to use tech responsibly and ethically and think critically about the information they find online.
Through technologies, we support students in becoming lifelong learners who are prepared for the challenges of today and tomorrow. Some examples?
Our Venice school has been an Apple Distinguished School since 2018, harnessing the power of Apple devices and tools to foster creativity, curiosity, and academic excellence.
We developed VR experiences to make learning interactive and effective, which tutoring provider GoStudent used to launch its VR platform with English and Spanish lessons.
Should we let students use ChatGPT?
Teachers and parents often are concerned that students use tech to cheat, but AI and the other cutting-edge tools are a great ally. Certainly, there might be times where some students ask AI to complete tasks or prepare essays on their behalf. But should we be overly worried about this possibility?
Let's remember, even before the Internet or AI, students sought family help and copied from classmates. Teachers are well-equipped to deal with cheating. They know their students well, and are able to tell the difference between authentic and copied work.
Here at school, through AI we create personalized learning plans for each student, based on individual strengths, weaknesses, and interests. We use it to provide feedback to students on their work, helping them identify areas where they need to improve. We also use it to create more stimulating content, such as VR simulations and interactive games.
Adopting this perspective is not just about developing a positive relationship with technology. It also helps students realize that their creativity and passion are stronger than the addictive pull of overusing technology.
