International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women | H-FARM

Our video contribution, inspired by the words of our student Ginevra.

Gender-based violence is a global pandemic, affecting 1 in 3 women worldwide. It takes many forms, from subtle put-downs and threats to extreme physical and mental abuse. The fact that it is so widespread shows how deep-rooted gender inequality still is in our societies. To break this cycle, we must address it in families, schools, and across society as a whole. We must have open and honest conversations, challenge harmful norms, empower victims to speak out, and educate on respect, consent, empathy, and the management of emotions from a very young age. Some useful tools we would like to share: 1522, a 24/7 active anti-violence and stalking helpline, available in multiple languages, and also via chat on the website; Signal for Help, a hand gesture for asking for help developed by the Canadian Women's Foundation: simply fold your thumb into your palm, holding the other four fingers in the other hand, and then clench your hand into a fist; Viola Walk Home, a 24/7 video service that accompanies anyone who feels unsafe walking on the street, also available on Instagram; Smartphone emergency services to set up specific actions such as calling by pressing and holding one of the volume keys, initiating the call by pressing the side button 5 times, or entering emergency contacts.
Let's echo the words of our student Ginevra Benacchio: "I am not a trophy. I am not property. I am not someone's something. I am me". These are part of a broader reflection she published on the Instagram account of H-INSIDERS, the newspaper created and directed by H-FARM College students, of which Ginevra is a co-founder.
