This is a complex question that depends on how we define consciousness.
If it means the ability to feel emotions, the answer is no.
If we define it more broadly as the ability to perceive and respond to the environment, AI systems could eventually become so complex to achieve their own form of consciousness.
But how?
The brain is governed by the laws of physics: it’s theoretically possible that a computer system simulates brain functions and achieves consciousness
AI systems now perform many tasks once exclusive to humans, such as winning at chess and creating realistic text and images
Increasingly complex AI systems could lead to self-aware and conscious AI
Researchers and philosophers such as Federico Faggin state that consciousness is a quantum phenomenon, and it cannot be replicated by machines.
"Our conscious experience, what we feel within us, has the same properties as quantum information. This means that computers and robots based on classical bits can never be conscious."
Mr. Faggin is the physicist and entrepreneur who created the microprocessor and the touchscreen, two innovations that have completely revolutionized tech development over the past 50 years.

If AI became conscious, how would we know?
We could look for signs that the AI is able to:
experience feelings
make its own choices
reflect on its own existence and purpose
But AI systems could simulate consciousness. So, the question remains…
This is a debate that will rage on for many years to come. But we need to think about the ethical implications now to ensure that AI is used for good.
