Narrative Structure Certificate Program
A 6-meeting course designed for university students and professionals.
This certificate on writing and the mechanics of narrative is taught in English, but it is designed to sharpen the communication skills of those who write in any language.
Days 1 and 2: What belongs in a text
Participants study ways to determine what should be included in a text, and what is better left out. Special attention is given to techniques for sequencing in sentences, paragraphs and longer passages; getting the order of information right can mean the difference between writing that is formidable and a flop.
Days 3 and 4: The right sequence for it
Participants will study sequencing in films, using techniques from cinematic storytelling to glean insights for crafting compelling writing, be it for a corporate website, business letter, academic article, novel or screenplay.
Days 5 and 6: Writing vividly and with authority
Using examples from cinema, participants will study how to write visually, craft dialogue that resonates, and harness the power of symbolism for both fiction and non-fiction writing. With examples drawn from journalism, they will study techniques to establish a writer’s credibility and hold readers’ interest.
